Overview

Coloring enthusiasts, bird lovers, and flower gardeners will all delight in our biggest and most exciting new coloring book, set at home where the majority of America’s 100 million birders and flower gardeners live and interact with nature every day—Backyard Birds and Blossoms.

Featuring glorious backyard birds with flowering annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, and vines, each coloring page is intricately designed with scientific accuracy to create real and true connections with nature at home. As a BONUS feature, we’ve included a 30″ landscape poster that can be removed and colored for a wonderful extended experience. And, this is our first coloring book to include our FREE downloadable BIRD QR app to tap, listen, and learn.

Backyard Birds and Blossoms is the third adult coloring title from leading bird authority, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and this one dives deeper into what birders love as they enjoy their own personal “great outdoors” at home. For this special coloring book, we’ve assembled an “A-team” of contributors—Dr. Emma Ileana Greig, the Cornell Lab’s Director of renowned “citizen science” platform, Project FeederWatch; Stacy Tornio, former editor of Birds & Blooms Magazine and author of Bird Brainiacs; and Brenda Lyons, who brought us America’s Favorite Birds

Author Information

Dr. Emma Ileana Greig is the team leader of Project FeederWatch, a major citizen science program at the Cornell Lab, where people participate annually in a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America. FeederWatch data help scientists track broad movements of winter bird populations and long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance. Emma holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and has studied birds in Australia, Malaysia, and Hawaii, and has taught sound recording workshops in Brazil.

Stacy Tornio has written seven nature and gardening books that all focus on getting kids and families outside, including Bird Brainaics for the Cornell Lab Publishing Group. She is a native Oklahoman, who now resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she enjoys watching her two children explore nature in their own backyard and beyond. She has numerous freelance credits to her name, and she was formerly the editor of the national birding and gardening magazine Birds & Blooms. Stacy lives in Greenfield, WI.

Brenda Lyons is an illustrator from Manchester, Connecticut, whose work explores the natural world with a deep love and focus on birds. Her watercolor paintings capture birds and otherworldly avian creatures in realistic and dreamlike compositions, while she also paints fantastical worlds in acrylic, oils, as well as using pen and ink and graphite. Brenda is the author and illustrator of our America’s Favorite Birds: 40 Beautiful Birds to Color and Winged Fantasy: Draw and Paint Magical and Mythical Creatures (IMPACT Books, 2014). She holds her B.A. in Art from Rocky Mountain College, and her M.F.A. in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Brenda also volunteers the at Horizon Wings Raptor Rehabilitation and Education Center, helping care for sick and injured raptors and corvids, as well as community events and education programs.
