Northern Cardinals

The Northern Cardinal is perhaps responsible for getting more people to open a field guide than any other bird. The male is a perfect combination of familiarity and style in a shade of red that can’t be missed, especially in snowy backyards. Even the female bird sports a sharp crest and warm red accents. The female cardinal is one of the few female North American songbirds that sing, and she often sings while sitting on her nest. From spring into summer, their sweet whistles are one of the first sounds of the morning. Illustration from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

ʻAlalā Love

The Hawaiian crow or ʻAlalā is a species of bird in the crow family that is currently extinct in the wild. Today, the Hawaiian crow is considered the most endangered of the family Corvidae (in which crows are a member). They are recorded to have lived up to 18 years in the wild, and 28 years in captivity. We celebrate the ʻAlalā in his special puzzle as reintroduction programs into the wild are currently underway! Illustration by Caren Loebel-Fried.

Black-capped Chickadee

A bird almost universally considered “cute” thanks to its oversized round head, tiny body, and curiosity about everything, including humans. This 500-piece puzzle features a cheerful chickadee created by an artist from the Cornell Lab’s Bartels Science Illustration Program.

NEW! Midnight Migration (Panoramic Puzzle)

You may have seen geese migrating in a V-shape overhead, honking loudly as they go. But what about songbirds like warblers, grosbeaks, and thrushes? They migrate under cover of darkness, when conditions can be more favorable for flying, and safer from predators. Though you may not see them, if you listen carefully, you may occasionally hear short, high-pitched call notes coming from the night sky. Warblers that weigh as little as two or three nickels are capable of migrating thousands of miles each spring and fall.
